Julien Poydras Center
Suzanne Turner Associates provided a cultural landscape assessment and schematic design for the Julien Poydras Center, current home of the Pointe Coupee Historical Society. The former high school (built 1924) was transformed into a community and arts center in 1991. The front lawn contains the grave of Julien Poydras, a prominent landowner, businessman, congressman, and philanthropist.
The plan features the restoration of a mature tree canopy present in the 1950's, a large event lawn, stage and courtyard, and a parking area. Contextually, the land sits across the street from False River, and adjacent to school board offices and also St. Mary of False River Catholic Church.
There are many stories associated with the landscape of Poydras High School, but none as significant as the story of Julien Poydras, and the many contributions that he made to the culture, history, politics, economy, and educational quality of Pointe Coupee Parish and the state of Louisiana.
